Vitamin A (beta-carotene)

plusvitamins_withbox.jpg

Using vitamins as part of a natural approach to treating hair loss can be a healthier method to use as long as you are informed about what you are using.

In large doses, even many types of vitamins or natural supplements can be harmful or even fatal.

However if used correctly, methods using vitamin A for hair loss treatments may be healthier than those containing chemicals. These chemicals may lead to side effects. Being informed of more natural options is a way to avoid taking treatments with chemicals.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A describes a group of five similar compounds. The most popular members of the vitamin group are retinol and beta carotene. Others are carotenoid compounds.

Vitamin A occurs as retinol in animals. Actually, it is found as its ester, retinol palmitate.

It is a yellow, fat-soluble compound which is converted to retinol in the intestine before storage. The stored retinol is then converted to retinal, a compound that absorbs light and is essential in the eyes for color vision and seeing in low light.

The other Vitamin A compounds including beta carotene, alpha carotene, gamma carotene and beta cryptoxanthin are derived from plants. They are converted to retinal in omnivores and herbivores but not in carnivores.

Retinol is the most potent form of Vitamin A, therefore, plants are not recommended to serve as the sole source of the vitamin.

In fact, Vitamin A supplements and foods fortified in Vitamin A provide more of the vitamin than most plant-based sources.

The recommended daily intake values of Vitamin A vary with age. Children need between 300 and 500 micrograms per day while adolescents and adults should take between 600 and 900 micrograms of the vitamin per day.

Pregnant mothers are advised to take 770 micrograms per day and breastfeeding mothers should ingest 1300 micrograms of Vitamin A daily.

Vitamin A is essential to quite a number of biochemical processes in the body. It is known to be central to vision through its interaction with the rods and cones of the eyes.

The vitamin is also known to the important to gene transcription and expression, a healthy immune system, development of human embryos and production of red blood cells.

Vitamin A also contributes to skin health and has antioxidant properties.

Vitamin A can be found abundantly in the following food sources: animal livers, butter, carrot, spinach, broccoli, cheese, mango, milk and egg.

There are two kinds of Vitamin A deficiency: primary and secondary. In primary Vitamin A deficiency, the individual does not ingest the recommended daily amount of the vitamin either from plant or animal sources.

Secondary deficiency occurs when certain factors including zinc deficiency, smoking and alcoholism affect the optimal absorption of the vitamin from the intestine.

Both forms of Vitamin A deficiency produce the same outcomes.

Signs of deficiency in the vitamin include impaired vision, night blindness, dryness of the mucosal membranes of the eyes, respiratory tract, and urinary bladder leading to conjunctivitis, total blindness, respiratory and urinary complications.

Vitamin A deficiency also produces an impaired immune system and the formation of white lumps in hair follicles. This later sign quickly leads to hair loss.

On the other hand, too much supplementation of Vitamin A can lead to toxicity. Since Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, it is not as easy to eliminate from the body as the water-soluble vitamins.

Acute toxicity is seen when the level of Vitamin A in the body reaches 25,000 IU per kg. This can be reached by consuming about 4,000 IU of the vitamin every day for at least 6 months. This toxicity can lead to renal failure and liver damages.

Signs of Vitamin A toxicity include nausea, anorexia, vomiting, irritability, blurry vision, headaches, body pains, lethargy and hair loss.

Just as for its deficiency, Vitamin A toxicity shares certain common signs such as dryness of the mucous membranes, poor skin health and hair loss.

Therefore, supplementation with the vitamin for the treatment of alopecia should be carefully monitored, and high doses should not be taken for long-term therapies.

Relative Vitamin A Activity
Retinol – 1
Dietary Beta Carotene – 1/12 of Retinol
Beta Carotene in oil – 1/2 of Retinol
Dietary Gamma Carotene – 1/24 of Retinol
Dietary Alpha Carotene – 1/24 of Retinol
Dietary Beta Cryptoxanthin – 1/24 of Retinol

Vitamin A and Hair Loss

The antioxidant properties of Vitamin A are especially useful for the protection of hair follicle cells. Circulating free radicals damage cells easily and accelerate the process of aging.

Vitamin A can mop up these reactive radicals and prevent them from damaging the cells of the hair follicles.

Similarly, Vitamin A supplementation prevents dryness of the scalp and wilting of the hair pores. This also contributes to the prevention of hair loss because a well-oiled skin signifies a well-nourished skin. In this way, hair shafts are healthier and the hair appears lush and full.

Since Vitamin A supplementation requires a fine balance in order not to worsen hair loss, the recommended dosage of the vitamin in the treatment of alopecia is usually between 5,000 and 25,000 IU per day.

Some Key Points to Consider

Before deciding on what hair loss vitamins, herbs or other supplements you want to add to your daily regimen to try to prevent and reverse hair loss, you should know what exactly you are taking and what it can do.

  • Vitamin A is good for overall health, especially hair and nails. This can be taken alone or as part of a multivitamin.
  • Users should also be aware, however, that too much Vitamin A can actually result in the loss of hair. It is important when using a vitamin A hair loss method to have a healthy balance of this vitamin.
  • It is a good idea to have a good, healthy natural balance of vitamins and nutrients either through your diet or by using supplements. This can help the body to be balanced and enable it to correct imbalances naturally.

The 3 Benefits of Vitamin A for Hair

Many who use vitamin A for hair loss see results and there are other benefits like healthier skin, as well.

  • Vitamin A is a key player in stimulating healthy growth in hair, skin and nails, and in fact, helps regulate certain aspects of the hair follicle. This in turn helps grow stronger, healthier hair as well as retain the hair already present.
  • Vitamin A is an anti-oxidant and anti-oxidants are known for their ability to promote healthy blood circulation. Healthy circulation improves the hair follicles ability to function which is crucial to avoiding hair loss.
  • Vitamin A can be taken as an oral supplement or used in a topical oil approach. Applying a vitamin A solution to the scalp can aid in improving the health of the scalp and hair follicles.

The Bottom Line

As you know Vitamin A, in addition to other vitamins such as Vitamin B, Vitamin C are beneficial to promoting overall better health which can help the body to work to prevent hair loss and encourage growth.

Vitamin A however is a vitamin that focuses more closely on the condition of hair and nails. A body which is balanced has a steady supply of the vitamins and nutrients that help it function properly, including the scalp and hair follicles.

Vitamin A is also crucial to the body as an anti-oxidant.

The body needs anti-oxidants to have improved circulation function. Studies have shown healthy circulation is vital towards being able to prevent hair loss and eventually see hair regrowth.

Circulation is what enables the scalp to be healthy. Not to mention this also aids in causing the hair follicles to be healthier which means less lost hair and improved hair growth. (http://www.progressivehealth.com/hair-loss-vitamin-a.htm)

~B-Vitamins and Why NouriTress Added Them~

A water soluble compound, vitamin B consists of different variants that can be found in foods that are rich in proteins. Vitamin B can be found sin foods such as soy nuts, carrots, eggs and meat. Thus, most people can easily get vitamin B as it is found in foods in a regular diet.

However, keep in mind, since the B vitamins are water-soluble, any excess of the vitamin is easily flushed out of the body.

Eating food with vitamin B content will reduce hair loss and increase hair growth.

The B Vitamins

Vitamin B refers to a group of eight vitamins which, although related, are clearly different.

At one time the B vitamins were thought to be one. When it was discovered they were distinct, quite a number of compounds were once thought to belong to the family. Such compounds include carnitine, once Vitamin B20; para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), once Vitamin B10; adenine, once Vitamin B4.

The eight members of the B complex are B1 or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin, B3 or niacin, B5 or pantothenic acid, B6 or pyridoxine, B7 or biotin, B9 or folic acid, and B12 or Cobalamin.

These B vitamins are all water-soluble, therefore, they are extensively distributed in the body and easily eliminated in the urine. Because of the later reason, most of them are safe even in large doses. However, there are cases of toxicities for Vitamin B6 and B3.

The B vitamins are essential to many biochemical processes in the body including regulation of hormones, minerals and general metabolism.

They are important to the nervous system and enhance the immune system; they help maintain healthy muscle tone, skin, nails and hair; they are needed for cell division and are known to reduce the risk of developing certain cancers (for example, pancreatic cancer).

It is possible to develop a deficiency for each of the B vitamins. This happens when they are not adequately supplied in the diet or when their absorptions are hindered.

A deficiency of Vitamin B1 results in beriberi; without Vitamin B2 a number of symptoms including dry skin, inflammation of mucosal membranes and dermatitis results; Vitamin B3 deficiency presents as pellagra, dermatitis and mental confusion.

Vitamin B5 deficiency is uncommon but when it occurs, it results in acne, itching, tingling skin and loss of sensation in the fingers and toes; Vitamin B6 deficiency results in anemia, hypertension and dermatitis; Vitamin B7 deficiency is rarely seen in adults but in children it can impair growth and cause nerve damage.

Both Vitamin B9 and B12 deficiencies result in anemia and elevated homocysteine levels. They may also lead to neurological damages.

Dietary sources of B vitamins include plants and animals. The only exception is Vitamin B12 which is only present in animal products.

Meat including fish, meat products and animal liver are good sources of the B vitamins. They can also be found in large quantities in molasses, yeast, beans, whole grains, chili pepper, bananas and potatoes.

While there are supplements of B vitamins formulated singly, with other B vitamins as Vitamin B complex and with other vitamins as multivitamin preparations, unwarranted Vitamin B supplementation should be avoided.

This is because after absorbing what it can use, the body simply eliminates any excess Vitamin B. Vitamin B supplements are especially recommended for the aged and those undergoing stressful activities.

Vitamin B9 is a solid recommendation for pregnant women since a deficiency in the vitamin especially early in the embryo development can lead to birth defects.

B vitamin supplements should be considered in the treatment of hair loss especially when the alopecia is due to vitamin deficiency. For balding people who smoke or drink considerably, this is most likely the cause of their hair loss.

Still, other people experiencing thinning hair should consult their doctors to know if they are deficient in any of the B vitamins.

Considering the number of biochemical processes dependent on the B vitamins, it is clear that Vitamin B supplements can promote hair growth and stop hair loss. They especially nourish cells of the hair follicles.

Some of the B vitamins known to help reverse hair loss include Vitamin B3, B5, B6 and B12. Similarly, deficiencies in Vitamin B1, B2, B3 and B5 cause hair loss which can be stopped with adequate supplementation.

In treating hair loss, the B vitamins deliver great results when they are paired with Zinc. Together, zinc and the B vitamins may inhibit the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

DHT is synthesized from testosterone and is regarded as the main cause of androgen-dependent alopecia. It causes the rapid decline of hair follicle cells both in number and activity. Therefore, immediate supplementation with B vitamins is needed to quickly reverse hair loss due to DHT.

Deficiencies of B Vitamins
B1 or Thiamine – Beriberi, Korsakoff’s syndrome, hair loss
B2 or Riboflavin – Ariboflavionosis, hair loss
B3 or Niacin – Pellagra, dementia, hair loss
B5 or Panthothenic acid – Acne, Nerve damage, itching, hair loss
B6 or Pyridoxine -Anemia, hypertension, edema, dermatitis
B7 or Biotin – Impaired growth and neurological damage
B9 or Folic acid – Anemia, birth defects
B12 or Cobalamin – Anemia, memory loss, loss of cognitive function

The Basics of Vitamin B and Your Hair

The fact of the matter is that, a healthy diet leads to better overall health and the better their eyes, skin, nails and hair will be.

Some hair loss issues are the result of issues well beyond a healthy diet, but getting the vitamins and nutrients needed may still be able to help lessen the amount of hair lost and increase the overall appearance of the hair.

Still, there are some things to keep in mind in about vitamin B and hair loss.

  • It is fairly common for women who are suffering from hair loss to have a B-12 deficiency. It is important to have appropriate levels of B-12 in the body as well as making sure to get a good balance of foods such as eggs and meat can help the body to get the right amount of B-12 without having to take supplements.
  • Increasing your levels of B-12 are a good way to try to slow down the hair loss process and stimulate growth.
  •  B vitamins are so crucial to potential hair regrowth that these vitamins are very often prescribed in addition to other hair loss treatments. Hair loss products that contain Minoxidil, such asRogaine, or other products like Propecia are often paired up with B vitamins to improve the ability and chances for regrowth.

Other Facts about B Vitamins for Hair Loss

Vitamin B is an important factor when it comes to hair loss prevention and regrowth. This is apparent from the amount of online research which all points to the same conclusion and mentions Vitamin B as a vital part of working through hair loss prevention. There are a few other things to keep in mind:

  • Aside from oral methods of getting vitamin B for hair loss, there are also products such as shampoos and conditioners that now use this as an ingredient. Klorane Strengthening Shampoo with Quinine & Vitamin B is a popular example of this.
  • Vitamin B along with folic acid folic acid is also known to regenerate the cells that grow hair.
  • In addition to causing growth, vitamin B helps improve the health and strength of follicles to prevent hair loss.
  • While vitamin B may assist prescribed hair loss treatments, it also helps with other natural treatments. Biotin for hair loss which has quickly become one of the most widely used hair loss supplements on the market today is derived from vitamin B in combination with vitamin H. This supplement has actually been proven to aid in helping to prevent hair loss which explains its popularity.
  • Vitamin B-3 aids in healthier blood flow to even to root of the hair.
  • B-5 is believed to help stimulate hair growth to replace lost hair. A deficiency in this vitamin could make it more challenging for your hair regrowth to continue.

Hair Loss In The African American Community, Is It An Epidemic?

Image

Studies show that over 30 million women in the country are experiencing hair loss, with 70% of that 30 million being African American Women. You may wonder what is going on, why is this happening? There are several causes of hair loss and hair thinning, but one of the biggest causes in the African American community is mechanical damage. What is mechanical damage? Many black women and some black men braid their hair or wear hair weaves, and under normal conditions these cause no problems. However if the weave is attached too tight or the braids are wrapped too tight, they put a constant strain on the hair follicle. If this is done for an extended period of time permanent hair loss can result. This is known as traction alopecia and is fairly common among people who braid or weave their hair. You should always make sure the person applying the braids or weave is qualified to do so and don’t wear braids or weave continuously for extended periods of time.

Many people change the appearance of their hair by using chemical treatments like hair color, tints, bleaches, straighteners, relaxers and permanent waves. If correctly done and done using reputable products, its rare to have any damage. However, hair can become weak and break if any of these chemicals are done too often. Hair can break if the solution is left on too long, if two procedures are done on the same day, or if bleach is applied to previously bleached hair. Some chemical relaxers do contain powerful chemicals and there have been instances of people getting chemical burns from these products resulting in permanent hair loss. Only go to qualified hairstylist and if doing it yourself make sure you only use reputable products and follow the product directions.

There are other factors that can cause hair loss but we wanted to focus on mechanical damage because so many African American women are wearing hair weaves and braids now and hair loss is becoming an epidemic in the African American community.

NouriTress Perfect Hair Products was developed to address these issues and we have been helping women grow and wear their own hair since 1998 with over 4,000,000,000 vitamins sold worldwide. Our Follicle Therapy which is pictured above invigorates the root to promote hair growth as well as unblock clogged hair follicles that cause hair loss and it is great for all types of hair! Visit our website http://www.nouritress.com for information on our many products that that help fight hair thinning and hair loss. Have a healthy hair day!

Men And Hair Thinning

Men'sPromo

What is male pattern balding?

The male pattern baldness (MPB) form of androgenetic alopecia (there is also a female pattern baldness) accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. By age 35, two-thirds of American men will have some degree of appreciable hair loss and by age 50 approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair. About 25% of men who suffer from male pattern baldness begin the painful process before they reach 21.  Contrary to societal belief, most men who suffer from male pattern baldness are extremely unhappy with their situation and would do anything to change it. Hair loss affects every aspect of their life. It affects interpersonal relationships as well as their professional life. It is not uncommon for men to change their career paths because of hair loss. (http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/hair-loss/hair-loss-introduction-mens%5B/embed%5D)

Most men start to notice hair thinning early on, but they ignore it as if it will magically grow back and that’s definitely not the case. Male pattern balding can be prevented even if it is hereditary, if it is treated when it is first noticed. The hair that is lost in most cases may not grow back but hair loss overall can be halted. NouriTress ER day and night drops contain procapil which is a naturally clinical proven ingredient that prevents and reverses hair thinning and loss of hair. They also contain tricogen which is a complex that solves male pattern baldness very fast, it stimulates natural hair growth and it is a DHT blocker. DayandNight-Drops

DHT which is short for dihydrotestosterone is a male sex hormone, an androgen. 5α-reductase, an enzyme, synthesizes DHT in the adrenal glands, hair follicles, testes and prostate.  DHT is the primary contributing factor in male pattern baldness. However, female hair loss is more complex, and DHT is only one of several possible causes. Women with increased levels of DHT may develop certain androgynous male secondary sex characteristics, including a deepened voice and facial hair. DHT plays a role in the development and exacerbation of benign prostatic hyperplasia, as well as prostate cancer, by enlarging the prostate gland. Prostate growth and differentiation are highly dependent on sex steroid hormones, particularly DHT.

Pygeum Africanum And Hair Loss

Pygeum-Africum-For-Hair-Loss

What is Pygeum?

The African cherry tree, pygeum africanum, is an evergreen found at higher elevations across Africa and it’s been used for medicinal purposes since the 1700s. When used in combination with Saw Palmetto, this duo has been shown to drastically reduce levels of DHT which is a major cause of hair loss.

The extract from Pygeum bark is used in herbal medications to relieve symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or prostate enlargement. Although the mechanism of its action is unknown, it is assumed that Pygeum could inhibit the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the main cause of BPH and is also believed to be the primary factor responsible for male and female pattern baldness. In one clinical study, the effects of Pygeum africanum on BPH were examined in conjunction with nettle root extract (another DHT blocking agent) and it was concluded that combining these two herbs increased their effectiveness.

Pygeum bark has been used in herbal medicine in Europe since the 1700s. Traditionally, the bark of the tree was gathered and powdered and made into a tea which was taken for genito-urinary complaints. Pygeum has also shown promise in preventing or reducing the symptoms of prostate cancer and chronic prostatis.

Some additional traditional uses of Pygeum include use as an aphrodisiac, and as a remedy for fever, impotence, kidney disease, malaria, partial bladder outlet obstruction, urinary tract infections, inflammation, malaria, prostatic adenoma, and psychosis.

One of the key active compounds in Pygeum, oleanolic acid, may also stimulate an immune response that can prevent development of malignancy in those with benign prostate enlargement. (http://wwwsupremehealth.com/hair-loss-treatments/pygeum-africanum-and-hair-loss/)

What is DHT?

DHT, which stands for Dihydrotestosterone, is a male sex hormone that increases in our bodies as we age. As DHT levels rise in the blood they effect the most important part of the hair follicle, the dermal papilla, which is responsible for the hair’s growth. The dermal papilla is fed by the skin’s blood capillaries, getting all of its essential nutrients for proper hair growth. DHT binds to receptors on the dermal papilla, blocking proper blood flow and starving the hair, ruining it’s overall integrity and even resulting in hair loss. Scientists have concluded that by lowering DHT in our bloodstreams we can fight hair loss from the inside out. (http://beautysupply.about.com/od/hairtreatments/fl/Block-DHT-Stop-Hair-Loss.htm)

The American Hair Loss Association, the only national, nonprofit 501(c)3 charity devoted to hair loss, states that when DHT is suppressed, hair follicles will continue to produce healthy hair. In the book, “Nutrition for Healthy Skin: Strategies for Clinical and Cosmetic Practice,” Jean Krutmann, professor of dermatology and environmental medicine at the Heinrich-Heine-University in Dusseldorf, Germany, states that pygeum is believed to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, which will limit the production of DHT. This gives some credence to the idea that pygeum may help with hair loss, it is often contained in herbal hair loss treatments. (http://www.livestrong.com/article/546657-pygeum-and-hair-loss/)

Ingesting these DHT blockers won’t cure hair loss overnight, but there’s more and more evidence every day about just how effective this type of oral treatment can be. Along with any vitamin therapy, the trick is to keep taking your supplements. Consistency is key. Along with taking DHT blockers, there are many other supplements that can feed and support healthy hair. Biotin, Vitamin B12, Niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Zinc, MSM and Iron can all be added to help thicken the hair, and even make it grow faster.(http://beautysupply.about.com/od/hairtreatments/fl/Block-DHT-Stop-Hair-Loss.htm) NouriTress Hair Vitamins Plus has these natural DHT blockers as well as the vitamins listed and taking them on a regular basis will help you grow longer thicker hair! http://www.nouritress.com

Hair Thinning and Hair Loss….What Causes it?

iStock_000016136531Small

Hair Is Like A Plant

The best way to think of the way hair grows is to picture a garden. How well it grows is completely a result of what is happening underground. “Like a garden,a normal hair cycle should lead to a product, which is the hair,” says Wendy Roberts, MD, a dermatologist at a private practice in Rancho Mirage, Calif. “Growth cycles are important because when they go awry, that is one of the reasons we have hair loss.”And things that interfere with the cycle — like medication, illness, infection, or chemicals — have the potential to stop hair from being formed properly. “It’s a very dynamic place and anything that can get the cycle off can cause hair loss,” Roberts says. Although hair loss may seem like a more prominent problem in men, women are nearly as likely to lose, or have thinning, hair. Most women notice it in their 50s or 60s, but it can happen at any age and for a variety of reasons. (http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/hair-loss/features/women-hair-loss-causes)

Understanding Hair Loss

Studies show that over 30 million women in the country are experiencing hair loss, with 70% of that 30 million being African American Women.  You may wonder what is going on, why this is happening but to understand this epidemic you must first understand the theory behind hair!

Hair grows in three different cycles: anagen, catagen, and telogen. About 90% of the hair on the head is in the anagen, or growth phase, which lasts anywhere from two to eight years. The catagen, or transition phase, typically lasts 2-3 weeks, during which  the hair follicle shrinks. During the telogen cycle, which lasts around two to four months, the hair rests.

An overwhelming majority of the time the hair is on the scalp, it is growing. Only about 10% of the strands are in transition or resting at any one time. Hair grows about 6 inches a year for most people.

Most people lose anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair each day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. On the days when hair is shampooed, people can lose up to 250 strands, Roberts said. But don’t avoid shampooing in an attempt to keep the hair, as it will fall out eventually, anyway.

For those who don’t plan on counting their hair every day, there are ways to know when hair is thinning or being lost at a higher rate. Roberts says that women will see a difference. When waking up in the morning, there may be an usually large amount on your pillow. When you comb your hair (especially without tugging, which can pull the hair out), more than normal will be left in the comb.

There are also other visual cues that women can look for over time. Although men’s hair tends to recede from the forehead or the crown of the head, women tend to notice thinning on the top third to one half of the scalp. Sometimes their frontal line stays intact, says Nicole Rogers, MD, of  Old Metairie Dermatology in Metairie, La. Women may see a part that is gradually becoming wider or see more of their scalp than normal when their hair is pulled back.

When a patient comes in with concerns about hair loss, there is a combination of ways to make a diagnosis, Rogers says. Preliminary blood work is usually taken to make sure the thyroid gland or an autoimmune disease isn’t the culprit.

Another way to diagnose what the problem is just by looking and listening, Rogers says. She asks what a patient’s mother, aunts, or grandmothers look like – if they have similar, or greater amounts, of hair loss. Using magnification on the scalp can show if a woman’s follicles vary in size – with some thick and others thin. These are two telltale signs of female pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia.

This is a hereditary condition that affects about 30 million American women, according to the America Academy of Dermatology,  and is the most common kind of hair loss Rogers sees in her practice. She tells WebMD that it happens to about 50% of women. Although it mostly occurs in the late 50s or 60s, it can happen at any time, even during teenage years, Rogers says.

Typically, each time a normal hair follicle is shed, it is replaced by hair that is equal in size. But in women with female-pattern hair loss, the new hair is finer and thinner – a more miniaturized version of itself, Rogers says. The hair follicles are shrinking and eventually they quit growing altogether.

If hair follicles are uniform in size, or if the hair loss is sudden, it is likely to be caused by something other than heredity, like a medical condition, Rogers says.

There are a wide range of conditions that can bring on hair loss, with some of the most common being pregnancy, thyroid disorders, and anemia. Others include autoimmune diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, Rogers says.

Though there has been a link between menopause and hair loss, Roberts says she doesn’t think there is a direct correlation. It could be that menopause and hair loss just occur at the same age.

Other reasons for hair loss include extreme stress; physical trauma like surgery or intense illness; dramatic weight loss over a short period of time; and taking too much Vitamin A, Roberts says. And hair loss can occur a couple of weeks to six months after any of these experiences.

“Someone can have surgery and be just fine and then two weeks later their hair starts falling out,” Roberts says. “It can be very scary when it starts falling out in big clumps.”

One other way to thin hair is self-inflicted – hairstyles like cornrows or too-tight braids can cause hair loss called traction alopecia.

All of the things women do to manipulate their hair — dyes, chemical treatments, bad brushes, blow dryers, and flat irons — can result in damage and breakage, Roberts says. This includes brushing too much and towel drying aggressively when the hair is wet.

Luckily, for most of these issues, the hair grows back or the loss can be reversed with medical treatments. But it is important to see a dermatologist if there seems to be something wrong, because the sooner treatment is started, the better the chances are for improving your growing season.
